OFFICE OF DIVERSITY, INCLUSION, AND EQUITY > TITLE IX > TITLE IX PROCEDURE
Title IX Procedure

Robert Morris University is obligated to respond promptly, thoroughly and equitably when it learns of any form of possible discrimination based on sex. This obligation remains even in the absence of a formal complaint. The University responds to reports of sexual harassment, including sexual violence, as part of its efforts to stop the harassment and prevent its recurrence of possible sex discrimination. The Title IX Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the prompt, fair, and impartial investigation and resolution of gender discrimination and sexual misconduct related complaints filed with the University.

Title IX ensures that both parties in a reported event have equal opportunity to be heard and participate in the grievance process. During an investigation, both the complainant and the respondent will:
  • Have the opportunity to have an adviser accompany them to any investigative meetings or any hearing part of the proceedings. An adviser is an individual whose role is to provide support, guidance, or advice to a party, and could be a parent, member of the RMU community, attorney, or any other person.
  • Receive timely notification, in writing, of the result of any RMU investigation, procedures for appeal, and when the results become final.

Investigation & Resolution Process

Upon receipt of a complaint, the Title IX Coordinator will promptly review the report and confirm whether or not the nature of the complaint constitutes a potential violation.
    • If it is determined that the complaint does not warrant investigation, the Title IX Coordinator will determine and document the appropriate resolution of the complaint and inform the parties of such resolution.
    • If it is determined that the complaint does not constitute a potential violation of Title IX or RMU's Policy on Sexual Misconduct and Relationship Violence, the complaint will be forwarded to the appropriate office for resolution (Student Life for students, Human Resources for employees).
During the complaint, investigative or disciplinary processes, the Title IX Coordinator and the Vice President of Student Life and/or the Vice President of Human Resources will take any interim measures necessary to protect the complainant and any witnesses. After consultation with the Title IX Coordinator, the complainant may decide that he or she does not wish to pursue an investigation; however, accommodations may still be provided. All requests for accommodations related to an incident should be made to the Title IX Coordinator.
